Upholstery vinyl spec guide
Mildew resistant means the material was tested against fungal growth under a named standard and showed no growth — usually ASTM G21 or AATCC 30. It is not the same claim as antimicrobial or antibacterial, which is a different test against bacteria, commonly AATCC 147. And neither of them prevents pink staining, which is caused by microbial activity beneath the topcoat and is tested separately under ASTM E1428. Three different problems, three different tests, and they are routinely blurred together in sales copy.
The three claims, separated

A material can carry one of these and not the others, and most do. Being specific about which one you actually need saves money in both directions.
Mildew resistance: what the test does
The material is inoculated with fungal cultures and held in warm, humid conditions for a set period, then examined for growth. ASTM G21 reports a rating, with Class 1 or "no growth" being the result you want. AATCC 30 is a related textile method; the Pinnacle line publishes AATCC 30-III, and Silvertex publishes ASTM G21 with no growth.
What matters practically is that the backing is tested too, not just the face. Mildew on coated fabrics usually starts on the fabric backing, where moisture gets trapped against foam or plywood and stays there. A face-only claim leaves the actual problem untested.
Why mildew resistance does not mean mildew proof
This is the honest limit of the claim, and it explains most of the complaints people have after buying material that carried it.
The test measures whether growth takes hold on the material itself. It does not do anything about growth on what is on top of the material. Suntan lotion, food residue, pollen, salt spray and skin oils form a film, and mildew grows very happily on that film regardless of what is underneath it. Then it stains the vinyl from the outside.
What you are seeing in that case is mildew growing on dirt, not mildew growing on vinyl. The material has not failed. It also does not help you. The fix is cleaning frequency, not a better spec — which is exactly why the 24-hour rule from Spradling's care guidance matters more than most spec lines.
Trapped moisture is the other half of it. Vinyl is not breathable. Water that gets past a seam or a staple line into foam has no route out, and a cushion that stays wet inside will smell and eventually stain through no matter how the face tested.
Pink staining is the one people mistake for mildew
Pink or reddish blotches on white and light-coloured seating are not mildew and not dirt. They are caused by microbial activity beneath the topcoat, and they migrate upward. That is why scrubbing accomplishes nothing, why they reappear after cleaning, and why they are almost exclusively a light-colour problem — on a dark colour the same thing may be happening invisibly.
Because it happens under the surface, mildew resistance on the face does not address it. ASTM E1428 is the test that does. Very few spec sheets publish a result for it; the Pinnacle material does, and the Uniroyal sheet for Spirit Millennium names pink-stain resistance as part of its Advanced BeautyGard finish.
If you are buying white or a pale colour for a boat, an RV or anything that lives damp, this is the specification to ask about first. It is the failure that ends the material's cosmetic life earliest.
Antibacterial is a different claim again
Antimicrobial and antibacterial claims are tested against bacteria, not fungi, most commonly under AATCC 147. Among the lines we stock, Silvertex publishes it — Spradling states bacterial resistance under AATCC 147 along with antimycotic protection in its Permablok3 topcoat.
It is worth being precise about what that buys, because it is oversold across the industry. An antibacterial additive inhibits bacterial growth on the surface of the material itself. It does not disinfect, it does not protect people, and it does not reduce the cleaning a facility has to do. In a clinical setting the properties that do real work are the tested tolerance of hospital disinfectants and the published approved-cleaner list, not the antibacterial line.
How to specify
- Damp storage, boats, RVs, anything that sits covered and wet: ask for a named mildew standard with a no-growth result, and confirm the backing was tested.
- White or light colours outdoors: ask specifically about ASTM E1428. This is the one that decides how it looks in three years.
- Clinical and personal-care settings: AATCC 147 is worth having, but the disinfectant tolerance and approved-cleaner list matter more.
- Everywhere: cleaning frequency beats every specification on this page. Mildew growing on a film of sunscreen does not care what the vinyl tested at.
