Spradling buying guide
This guide covers 18 Spradling vinyls (14 marine and four contract lines) plus Utopia HD topping fabric. The vinyls are 54" wide. Utopia HD is 60" wide, woven solution-dyed polyester for Bimini tops, not vinyl. All are sold by the yard with no minimum. If you are covering boat seats and do not have a spec sheet telling you otherwise, start with Zander: 100,000 double rubs, a Permaguard topcoat, 22 colors, $25.25 a yard. Consider Breeze when reducing heat buildup matters, or when its color or finish suits the job. Start with Anchor when price is the priority, then check the sample and specifications against the application. The four contract lines are covered further down.
The marine lines at a glance
Every Spradling marine vinyl below shares the same core: 54" wide, 30-yard rolls, PVC face, two-way stretch, 650-hour QUV and 1,000-hour Weather-Ometer UV passes, ASTM G21 no-growth mildew result, AATCC 147 antibacterial test, and the marine and contract flame list (FMVSS 302, IMO FTPC Part 8, NFPA 260 Class 1, UFAC Class 1, CAL TB 117-2013). Trexx MQ and Leon each drop one item from that flame list; check the product page if the job is transportation. What changes from line to line is the topcoat, the abrasion result, the cold-crack temperature, the color count and the price.

How to read that table
There are really three tiers. The 100,000-cycle lines (Zander, Beluga, Marlin, Leon, Apex, Gemini, Breeze) carry a protective topcoat, Permaguard, Permablok or PBG+, which is what resists sunscreen, denim dye and mildew stains on a boat. The 50,000-cycle lines (Islander, Navigator, Aries, Carbon Fiber, Trexx MQ, Diamante) use a plain acrylic topcoat; they are fine for a runabout that gets cleaned and covered, and Islander and Navigator have the widest color ranges in the group. Anchor is the price leader because it uses a standard polyester backing instead of Hi-Loft; it is a sound vinyl for a budget re-cover, not a sixty-foot yacht.
The one number people miss is cold crack. Zander, Beluga and Marlin pass at 14°F; everything else on the list passes at -10°F. If the boat winters outdoors in the upper Midwest or New England, that 24-degree gap matters more than the topcoat.
Start with Zander
Zander is the best value on the list: a 100,000-cycle Permaguard vinyl with 22 colors at $25.25, which is the same price as the 50,000-cycle lines. Beluga and Marlin share the same spec sheet numbers but look different: Beluga is a heavy, deep grain, Marlin a lighter pebble grain, and both have shorter palettes than Zander. Pick by the sample card. If you want that construction with the -10°F cold-crack rating, Leon has it at $26.00 with a Permablok Plus+ topcoat, and at 26 oz it is the lightest of the group, so it works around tight corners a little easier.
Breeze when the seats sit in the sun
Breeze is Spradling's PermaCool vinyl, built to absorb less heat than a standard vinyl of the same color. How much cooler depends on color, embossing and the weather; dark colors show the biggest difference, and it is a reduction, not a guaranteed seat temperature. Underneath the PermaCool surface it is a 100,000-cycle Permablok Plus+ vinyl at 29 oz, so you are not trading durability for the cooler touch. It is $45.00 a yard in 12 colors. Our own Pinnacle is the other cool-touch option we stock, at $31.50 in 40 colors; the Cool Touch collection puts the two side by side.
Apex and Gemini when stains are the worry
Both are 100,000-cycle vinyls at $29.50. Apex carries the PBG+ topcoat and Gemini carries Permablok, both aimed at the sunscreen, dye-transfer and mildew-stain problems that ruin light-colored boat seats. The trade is color range: Apex has 5 colors, Gemini has 9. If the color you need is not there, Zander with a cover is the practical answer.
Islander and Navigator when color range is the point
Islander (20 colors) and Navigator (18 colors) are the two broadest palettes in the 50,000-cycle tier, both $25.00, both acrylic topcoat, both -10°F. Aries is the same construction in 6 colors. Carbon Fiber is a patterned vinyl in 4 colors for accent panels and inserts. Trexx MQ and Diamante are Spradling's current Trexx Met MQ and Diamante MQ; we list them under the short names people search for.
Anchor when the budget decides
Anchor is $21.00 a yard in 13 colors. It has the same face, UV, mildew and flame results as the rest of the 50,000-cycle group; the difference is a 3.5 oz standard polyester backing against the 5.7 oz Hi-Loft backing on the others, and a 39-mil gauge. For a budget-conscious pontoon or fishing-boat re-cover, consider Anchor after checking the sample and specifications against the job.
Stretch, and what to use instead
Every Spradling marine line we stock is two-way stretch. Plan the stretch direction before you cut. If the job has compound curves, a rolled bolster or a helm seat with deep pleats, use Bayside by Morbern, which is our four-way-stretch marine vinyl.
The contract lines
| Line | $/yd | Colors | Weight | Double rubs | Cold crack | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patriot Plus | $31.50 | 46 | 34 oz | 200,000 | -20°F | Restaurant, office, hospitality and general contract seating; the workhorse |
| Whisper | $31.50 | 46 | 27 oz | 100,000 | -10°F | Hotel, lounge and residential work where the hand matters; soft matte finish |
| Silvertex | $37.75 | 44 | see page | 100,000 | see page | Healthcare submittals that name CFFA-201C, CFFA-101 or an approved-disinfectant list |
| Kilkenny Tweed | $37.75 | 19 | 32 oz | 100,000 | see page | A woven tweed look with vinyl cleanability; club chairs, traditional dining |
Patriot Plus is the default for indoor commercial seating: 200,000 double rubs, a Permablok finish, a -20°F cold crack and 46 colors at $31.50. Whisper costs the same and has the same color count but is built for feel rather than abrasion; it is 27 oz with a soft matte Permablok Plus+ face, and it stretches easily. If the piece gets touched more than it gets sat on, Whisper. If it gets sat on all day, Patriot Plus. Silvertex is the one to specify when a healthcare submittal names the CFFA healthcare tests; its Permablok3 topcoat has a published list of roughly 60 approved disinfectants. Kilkenny Tweed is the textile look. All four accept a 1:9 household-bleach solution when a cleaning protocol calls for it, and Formula 409 is on Spradling's approved-cleaner list.
If the job needs more abrasion than any of these, Spirit Millennium (1,500,000 double rubs) and Pinnacle are the two we point people to.
Utopia HD: woven fabric for Bimini tops
Utopia HD is not vinyl. It is a 60" wide woven, solution-dyed polyester topping fabric, 12.65 oz per square yard, 1200 denier, breathable and water resistant, for bimini tops, boat covers, awnings and mooring covers. $21.00 a yard cut, $19.00 a yard at 30 yards or more.
