We stock several vinyl lines at Carolyn Fabrics — including Spradling's Silvertex — so we've got no reason to talk one up unfairly. Here's a straight read on how the popular marine and contract vinyls actually differ, and where our own Pinnacle line fits.
First, know which job you're doing
"Marine" and "contract" vinyl overlap, but they're tuned for different stresses:
- Marine vinyl is built to fight UV, mildew, and standing water — boat seats, pontoons, dock furniture.
- Contract vinyl is built for abrasion and cleanability under constant use — restaurant booths, healthcare, waiting rooms, gym equipment.
A lot of buyers pick the wrong one because a sales page said "heavy-duty." The right question isn't which is toughest — it's tough against what?
The popular lines, honestly
Spradling Silvertex (we carry it) — a contract workhorse. SILVERGUARD silver-ion antimicrobial built in, surpasses 100,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs, big color range. Great for commercial seating where hygiene and a clean modern look matter.
Nautolex — a marine staple. Antimicrobial formulation with a PreFixx protective finish for cleanability and abrasion resistance. Strong pick for boats and powersports.
Naugahyde — the old reliable; a broad family of products, so specs vary widely by line. Always check the specific pattern, not the brand name.
Pinnacle Marine & Contract Vinyl (ours) — built to cover both jobs. Rated to 1.5 million double rubs, with a Stay Cool topcoat that keeps the surface from baking in the sun — the reason it works on a boat seat and a booth. It's our go-to when a shop doesn't want to stock two different vinyls for two different jobs.
Side-by-side
| Pinnacle (Carolyn Fabrics) | Silvertex (contract) | Nautolex (marine) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Marine + contract | Contract | Marine |
| Abrasion (double rubs) | 1.5 million (rated) | 100,000+ Wyzenbeek | Heavy-duty |
| Heat/UV feature | Stay Cool topcoat | — | UV-stable |
| Antimicrobial | Available | SILVERGUARD silver-ion | Antimicrobial |
| Protective finish | Yes | Permablok-class | PreFixx |
Double-rub ratings use different test methods (Wyzenbeek vs. Martindale) and aren't always apples-to-apples — treat them as a ballpark, and always order a sample to confirm hand and color.
Which should you buy?
- Boat seats in full sun: marine-tuned vinyl with real UV and heat protection. Pinnacle's Stay Cool topcoat earns its keep here.
- Restaurant / healthcare / high-traffic seating: a contract vinyl with a strong antimicrobial and cleanable finish. Silvertex is a proven pick; Pinnacle covers it too if you want one line for everything.
- A shop that wants to stock one vinyl for mixed work: that's the whole reason Pinnacle exists.
The honest bottom line
There's no single "best" marine vinyl — there's the right one for the stress your project actually sees. We stock multiple lines precisely so we can point you to the right one instead of the only one we sell. Not sure? Ask us for a sample and we'll match it to the job.
