Upholstery vinyl spec guide
Cold crack is the lowest temperature at which vinyl can be bent or flexed without splitting. It is measured by chilling a sample to a set temperature and then flexing it, and it is published as a single temperature. Around −20 °F is normal for contract interior vinyl. Genuine outdoor material is rated far lower — the Pinnacle line we stock is rated to −55 °C, which is −67 °F. It matters more than almost any other spec on an outdoor job because when it fails, it fails permanently and without warning.
Why it behaves differently from every other failure
Most ways upholstery vinyl wears out are gradual. Fade creeps in over seasons. Abrasion polishes and then thins. Staining accumulates. You get to watch all of it happen and decide when you have had enough.
Cold cracking does not work like that. Vinyl is a plasticised material, and plasticiser is what keeps it flexible. As the temperature falls, the material stiffens. Below its cold crack point it stops behaving like a flexible sheet and starts behaving like a brittle one — and the moment something flexes it, at a seam, over a cushion edge, where a hand grabs a bolster, it splits.
The split is a tear, not wear. It cannot be cleaned, conditioned or reversed. The piece needs recovering.
Where it actually happens
The failure needs two things together: cold material and a flex. That combination is common in places people do not think of as extreme.
- A boat on a trailer or a lift through a northern winter, then the first spring outing.
- An RV in unheated storage from November to April.
- A golf cart under a carport, used on a bright cold morning.
- A patio set left out, sat on during a mild afternoon in February.
- A UTV or tractor seat, which gets flexed hard every time somebody climbs in.
Note that none of those are Arctic conditions. A seat that sat overnight at 15 °F is well below freezing at its surface even after the air warms, and the person sitting down does not know that.
Reading the number

The point of the margin is not that a boat seat will ever see −67 °F. It is that a material rated there is nowhere near its limit at 10 °F, whereas a material rated to −20 °F is close enough to it that a cold snap, an aged sample and a hard flex can meet in the wrong place.
The trap on application lists
Cold crack is where a spec sheet often contradicts its own recommended-applications line. It is entirely normal to find a material listing marine and outdoor seating among its applications while publishing a −20 °F cold crack and nothing at all on pink staining. The application list is written by marketing. The cold crack number is produced by a test.
When the two disagree, believe the number.
Does cold crack get worse with age?
In practice, yes. Plasticiser migrates out of vinyl slowly over years, accelerated by heat and by UV exposure. A material that was comfortably within spec when it was installed is less flexible after five summers on a dock. This is why cold crack failures often appear on material that survived several winters without trouble — and why a generous margin on the original spec is worth paying for on a piece you intend to keep.
It is also why heat and UV performance are not separate concerns from cold performance. The same sun that fades the surface is quietly making the material more brittle underneath.
What to do with this
If the piece lives outdoors or in unheated storage for any part of the year, treat the cold crack rating as a hard filter rather than a tiebreaker. Get the number in writing before you buy, and if the sheet does not publish one, that is your answer.
