Upholstery vinyl buying guide
Choose by where the piece lives and what will kill it, not by the biggest number on the sheet. Outdoors, sun and cold end the material, so cold crack and UV decide. In a clinic, cleaning chemistry ends it, so the approved-cleaner list decides. In an aircraft, the burn certificate decides and nothing else qualifies. In a busy restaurant, abrasion and flammability decide. Match the failure mode to the specification and the choice usually makes itself.
Below is how we actually route this when somebody calls, including the cases where we send people to the cheaper material.

Pinnacle — the outdoor answer
Our house brand, and the only line we stock that we will put on an open boat without qualification. Cold crack at −55 °C (−67 °F), pinking performance to ASTM E1428, colourfastness to light at AATCC 16 Grade 4 after 1,500 hours, mildew resistance to AATCC 30:III, and Staycool solar-reflective technology across all 40 colours — the supplier rates it at 10 percent cooler in direct sun.
It also carries a 1,500,000 double rub Wyzenbeek result, which is contract-scale abrasion documentation on a marine-capable material. We had it tested past the usual marine reporting point precisely so specifiers would not have to choose between the two conversations.
On top of that it answers the procurement questions that are getting harder to dodge: no intentionally added PFAS, phthalate free, no PFC or PFOA, heavy-metal free, Prop 65 compliant, Red List Free, and it passes AB 2998 — it meets fire code without added flame-retardant chemicals.
Choose something else if: the job is an aircraft. Pinnacle is not aviation rated and is not supplied with burn-test documentation. There is no workaround on this one.
Spirit Millennium — the workhorse, and the aviation answer
Naugahyde's made-in-USA contract vinyl, smooth leather grain, and the longest track record of anything we sell. 1,500,000 double rubs on #8 cotton duck, mildew resistant, and the widest flammability list in our range: CAL 117-2013, NFPA 260, UFAC, BIFMA Class 1, MVSS-302, FAA FAR 25.853(a), Port Authority NY/NJ, Boston Fire Code, IMO FTP Part 8, Crib 5 and EN 1021.
If the job is an aircraft cabin, this is the conversation. If it is a bus, a rail car or a lobby that has to satisfy a municipal fire code, it is usually the shortest route to a certificate somebody will accept.
Uniroyal's care brochure is also unusually permissive: a 10 percent bleach solution may be used on difficult stains and may soak for around thirty minutes, followed by a clean-water rinse. Two details from that document worth knowing — the rinse is required, and it says to avoid paper towels and use a soft white cloth.
Choose something else if: you are shaping tight contours. Spirit is a thicker, less stretchy construction and it fights you on radii; gentle warmth from a hair dryer or sunlight helps, but keep the heat moving and never use a heat gun. And for open-boat marine, use Pinnacle — Spirit's cold crack is −20 °F, which is a contract interior number.
Silvertex — when infection control writes the spec
Spradling's textured contract vinyl with the Permablok3 topcoat. It is the line in our range with a published bacterial resistance result, AATCC 147, alongside mildew resistance to ASTM G21 with a result of No Growth.
What actually earns it the specification in a clinic is not the antibacterial line, though. It is the cleaning documentation: roughly sixty named approved products including Clorox Healthcare wipes, PDI Sani-Cloth AF3 and Super Sani-Cloth, Oxivir TB and Oxivir 1, Virex, CaviWipes and Wex-Cide; bleach cleanable at 1:9; isopropyl alcohol at 10 percent; an accelerated disinfectant exposure result under CFFA-101; and healthcare stain resistance to CFFA Specification 201-C 142.
To be straight about the antibacterial claim: an antibacterial additive inhibits bacterial growth on the surface of the material. It does not disinfect, it does not protect patients, and it does not reduce the cleaning a facility has to do.
Choose something else if: the abrasion number is what you are being judged on. Silvertex lists 100,000 cycles Wyzenbeek, which is a heavy commercial rating and a fifteenth of Pinnacle's figure. For an exam table that is the right material anyway — nothing wears out an exam table by abrasion — but if a spec sheet comparison is going in front of somebody counting double rubs, know the number before you are asked.
Classic — the one we send people to when they are overbuying
Nassimi's straightforward contract vinyl: 54 inches, 500,000 double rubs, 100 percent PVC and phthalate free over a polyester backing, mould and mildew resistant, and the full commercial flame set — FMVSS 302, NFPA 260, CAL TB 117 and UFAC Class 1. Warm soapy water for routine cleaning, Formula 409 for stubborn stains, and a 1:10 bleach solution is safe for disinfection.
For an office chair, a hotel headboard, a waiting room bench or a restaurant seat that lives indoors, this does the entire job. Specifying a −67 °F cold crack rating for a lobby is money spent on a failure mode that will never occur.
Choose something else if: the piece goes outside, or infection control is writing the specification.
Patriot Plus — contract work where colour range matters
Spradling's commercial contract vinyl with the Permablok protective finish and a broad colour line. It lists 200,000 cycles Wyzenbeek under ASTM D4157 / CFFA-1a.
Worth saying plainly how to read that: 200,000 cycles is laboratory abrasion evidence, not a statement that the surface failed at 200,000, and not a prediction of service life. In our experience Patriot Plus belongs in the heavy-contract conversation alongside higher-numbered products. Compare it on application, cleaning regime, exposure and hand rather than on the abrasion figure alone.
The three questions that settle most calls
- Does it go outside, or into unheated storage? If yes, the cold crack rating is a hard filter and most contract vinyl is eliminated on that line alone.
- Who cleans it, and with what? If the answer names hospital disinfectants, you need the approved-cleaner list, not the abrasion number.
- Does anything have to pass an inspection? If yes, get the standard and the edition year in writing before you buy. "CAL 117 pass" with no year is not a specification.
