Short answer: There is no dependable universal yardage for “two aircraft seats.” The answer changes with seat size, faces, backs, boxing, bolsters, inserts, armrests, headrests, grain direction, matching, and the cutting allowance. Use the removed covers as pattern pieces when possible, lay out every component at full size, and calculate vinyl yardage or full leather hides from that complete layout.
Inventory every covered component
Before measuring material, list what the job actually includes:
- Seat cushion faces, boxing, undersides, and closure areas.
- Seat backs, rear panels, bolsters, and inserts.
- Headrests, armrests, map pockets, piping, tabs, and trim pieces.
- Any side panels or cabin trim included in the same material order.
A “two-seat” estimate that ignores backs, boxing, piping, or inserts can miss a large part of the job.
Use the old covers as full-size pattern evidence
- Photograph and label the covers before disassembly.
- Mark seat position, orientation, grain direction, seam allowance, and material/color changes.
- Open seams carefully so the pieces can be laid flat.
- Include every mirrored piece and every repeated component.
- Lay the pieces out at full size in the same direction the new material must run.
If the old covers are stretched, shrunken, altered, or incomplete, the responsible upholsterer must correct the pattern rather than copying the distortion blindly.
Estimating 54-inch aviation vinyl

Make a 54-inch-wide planning lane and place the full-size pieces inside it while respecting grain direction, repeats, mirrored pieces, and the shop’s cutting space. Measure the total length used, then add the cutting allowance appropriate to the pattern and risk.
Do not rely only on surface-area math. Rectangular yardage can be lost to narrow gaps, long boxing strips, directional placement, and components that cannot nest efficiently.
Estimating Slipstream full hides
Slipstream Aviation Leather is sold by the full hide only, with an average planning size of approximately 50–55 square feet per hide. A hide is irregular, so its stated area is not a rectangular cutting yield.
Start with the vinyl/fabric yardage estimate, use the upholstery trade’s planning allowance of approximately 18 square feet of hide per yard of 54-inch fabric, divide by the current average hide size, and round up to the next full hide. When to add more allowance
- The design has directional grain, inserts, strong contrast, or matched seat pairs.
- The pattern contains many long strips or small pieces that do not nest efficiently.
- The leather layout must avoid natural edges or marks.
- The material may be difficult to match later by color or production order.
- The shop wants repair stock from the original order.
- The old covers are incomplete or the seat design is being changed.
