The short answer
The upholstery trade uses a working rule of thumb of about 18 square feet of hide per yard of 54-inch-wide fabric. That planning allowance accounts for cutting rectangular pattern pieces from an irregular hide and working around natural edges, marks, and grain variation.
To estimate the number of hides:
- Take the 54-inch fabric yardage required by the pattern.
- Multiply that yardage by 18 to estimate the square feet of hide required.
- Divide by the stated average size of the leather you are buying.
- Round the result up to the next full hide.

Why use 18 square feet per yard?
On paper, one yard of 54-inch fabric contains 13.5 square feet. A hide is not a rectangle: it includes a neck, legs, belly, natural edges, and grain variation. The 18-square-foot rule builds in a practical cutting allowance for typical seating work. Tight patterns with many small pieces may use a hide differently from long, simple panels.
The formula is a planning tool, not a guarantee. Lay out the actual pattern pieces before cutting whenever the job is close to a full-hide boundary.

A restaurant booth run: 6 yards × 18 = 108 square feet. Using 52 square feet per Roadhouse hide as a planning size, 108 ÷ 52 ≈ 2.1. Round up to 3 full hides, then check the pattern layout before ordering.
A single accent chair: 2.5 yards × 18 = 45 square feet. That planning allowance exceeds one Workhorse hide. Check the pattern layout and full-hide quantity with us before ordering. A Roadhouse hide may meet the area estimate, but the size and shape of the pieces still matter.
Aircraft seats: If the pattern estimate is 5 yards, 5 × 18 = 90 square feet. At approximately 52 square feet per Slipstream hide, 90 ÷ 52 ≈ 1.7. Round up and order 2 full hides. Confirm material, color, production-order, and documentation requirements with the person responsible for the specific aircraft and installation before ordering or cutting.
Why rounding up usually costs less
- Dye lots: natural leather can vary between production orders. Buying the required quantity together gives the best chance of consistent color.
- Cutting allowance: pattern placement, natural marks, directional grain, and mistakes can reduce usable yield.
- Future repairs: leftover leather from the original order is the best source for a close-match repair.
