Marine vinyl indoor use guide
Yes, marine vinyl works indoors, and for most household furniture it is over-specified rather than under-specified. The properties you are paying for — UV and lightfastness, mildew resistance, anti-pinking, cold crack — mostly address outdoor threats. The one thing to check before using it indoors is the opposite of what people expect: for commercial indoor seating, fire ratings matter more than any marine property, and not every marine vinyl carries them.
That is the whole decision. Marine vinyl indoors is usually fine and sometimes excellent; the trap is assuming that "tougher outdoors" automatically means "compliant indoors."

The fire rating question — the one that actually matters
Outdoor furniture is usually not subject to interior furnishing fire requirements. Indoor commercial seating frequently is.
So a vinyl chosen purely for marine performance may have excellent UV data and nothing to say about smoulder resistance. If the piece is going into a restaurant, waiting room, office, hotel or any commercial interior, ask for CAL TB 117-2013 and NFPA 260 with the edition year, and confirm the requirement with your authority having jurisdiction.
This is where a dual-rated material saves an argument. Pinnacle is a marine vinyl that also carries contract fire ratings — NFPA 260 Class 1, UFAC Class 1, CAL TB 117-2013, IMO FTP 2010 Part 8 — which is why it is our usual answer for anything that crosses between a boat and a building. Most marine-only lines will not have that.
For a residential sofa or a home dining chair, none of this applies in the same way. Domestic furniture is not held to commercial interior standards.
The honest trade-offs
- Hand and drape. Marine vinyl is generally built heavier than an indoor contract vinyl of the same price. On a boat seat that is a virtue. On a tightly upholstered dining chair with tight radii it can be harder to work and less forgiving around corners.
- You pay for specs you will not use. Anti-pinking and cold-crack performance are not doing anything in a lounge. If the piece is genuinely indoor and out of the sun, a contract vinyl may give you a better hand and more colour choice for the money.
- Colour range. Marine palettes skew towards boat colours — whites, greys, blues, sand. Contract ranges are usually broader.
- Texture. Many marine vinyls carry an aggressive grain for grip when wet. Attractive on some interiors, wrong on others.
How to decide in one question
Is the piece exposed to sun, moisture, or heavy cleaning?
If yes, marine vinyl is a good buy and the extra specs are doing real work. If no, and the space is not subject to commercial fire requirements, a contract vinyl will probably feel better and cost less. If the space is commercial, the fire ratings decide it, not the marine properties — and that is where a dual-rated material such as Pinnacle removes the choice altogether.
