Marine vinyl mildew guide
Mildew on boat seats is fungal growth feeding on what is on the vinyl — sunscreen, body oils, bait residue, salt, pollen, spilled drinks — rather than on the vinyl itself. That is why it usually cleans off when caught early, and why preventing it is mostly about removing food and moisture rather than buying a different material. Specify a vinyl with a published mildew result such as AATCC 30, clean the residue off, and never put a cover over a damp seat.
That last one causes more mildew than anything else on this list. A cover over wet cushions builds exactly the warm, dark, humid box a fungus wants.
Mildew is not pink stain — do not treat them the same

Getting this wrong is expensive in the other direction too: people scrub at pink staining for a season believing it is mildew, and people ignore early mildew believing it is permanent.
How to prevent it
- Dry before covering. The single highest-value habit. If the seats are damp, leave the cover off or prop it for airflow.
- Clean off the food. Sunscreen and body oils are the biggest contributors on most boats, followed by bait residue and spilled drinks. Regular light cleaning beats occasional heavy cleaning.
- Ventilate storage. A sealed boat in a humid climate grows mildew on everything inside it. Air movement matters more than temperature.
- Deal with standing water. Water pooling in a seat crease or a seam is a permanent culture site. Fix the drainage or the seam angle.
- Replace foam that stays wet. Wet foam under a sound cover keeps re-seeding the surface, and it is also the reservoir for pink staining. If it has soaked, replace it.
How to clean it off
Start mild and escalate only if you must. Follow the material's own guidance rather than a general recipe, because approved cleaners differ by line.

Step 4 is not optional. Cleaner residue left on the surface strips plasticiser, thins the topcoat and cracks the vinyl at the flex points — turning a cosmetic problem into a structural one. More boat seats are ruined by aggressive cleaning than by the mildew that prompted it.
Two things not to do: avoid paper towels, whose fibres abrade the finish, and avoid abrasive pads and hard-bristle brushes, which damage the surface permanently and leave it rougher and easier to soil next time.
Does mildew-resistant vinyl actually help?
Yes, but understand what the claim covers. A mildew-resistant material resists fungal growth in and on the material. It does not stop fungus growing on a layer of sunscreen sitting on top of it — nothing does, short of cleaning it off.
So the test result is worth having and is not a substitute for maintenance. Ask for AATCC 30 with a result rather than the word "mildew resistant."
