Medical exam table reupholstery guide
Reupholstering a medical exam table means removing the old covering from each cushion section, replacing any foam that has taken on fluid, and re-covering in a contract vinyl matched to the disinfectant the facility actually uses. On a typical two- or three-section table the material requirement usually lands between two and four yards of 54-inch vinyl. The covering costs a small fraction of a new table, and the decision that matters is not the technique — it is the material.
Most exam tables are worth recovering. What is rarely worth it is recovering them in the same material that just failed, without asking why it failed.
First: work out why the old covering died

Four of those five are chemistry or construction. Only one is wear. That is worth knowing before someone buys the highest double-rub material on the shelf to solve a problem abrasion did not cause.
Measuring and yardage
Exam tables vary enough that there is no universal number, so measure rather than assume. For each cushion section:
- Measure the length and width across the face, following the curve of the cushion rather than the flat of the base.
- Add the wrap-under — the distance the material has to reach beneath the platform to be secured, on all four sides.
- Add seam allowance, typically 1/2 inch per edge that will be sewn.
- Lay the resulting panel sizes out against a 54-inch width and see how many nest side by side.
Worked example. A table with a 27-inch-wide seat section and a 27-inch-wide back section, each about 30 inches long, needs panels of roughly 33 × 36 inches once wrap-under and seam allowance are added. Two 33-inch panels do not nest within 54 inches, so each takes its own length of the roll: about one yard per section, plus a margin for error. Three sections, three yards, and a little spare.
Buy the spare. A dye lot cannot be matched reliably later, and running half a yard short on a three-section table means recovering it in two shades. Order the extra with the original cut.
Replacing the foam
If fluid reached the foam, replace it. Foam that has been wet and dried holds odour and microbial growth that no amount of cleaning reaches, and recovering over it puts a new skin on an old problem.
Two cautions. Foam carries its own fire documentation, separate from the covering — under NFPA 260, filling classifies as its own component, so a Class I cover does not answer for what is underneath it. And check the edition year: TB 117-2000 included an open-flame test on resilient filling, which TB 117-2013 removed in favour of a smoulder test. "CAL 117 pass" with no year does not tell you which test the foam actually passed.
Construction details that decide how long it lasts
- Keep fluid out of the seam. The seam and its stitch holes are the entry point on a clinical surface. Detail them to shed fluid rather than merely to look tidy, and place them off the primary contact area where you can.
- Do not over-stretch the material. Vinyl pulled tight over a cushion is already under tension before a patient sits on it, and it will split at the corners first.
- Secure it evenly. Uneven tension shows as ripples across the face within weeks and never settles out.
- Let it come to room temperature before working with it. Cold vinyl is less forgiving around corners and radii.

When not to do it yourself
Powered and articulating tables put the covering under repeated mechanical stress at defined hinge points, and getting the tension wrong there fails quickly. Some coverings are bonded to a substrate rather than stretched over foam and do not come apart the way a conventional cushion does. And on equipment still under manufacturer warranty, recovering it may end that warranty — worth a phone call before a staple gun.
