What Makes Leather Aviation Grade?

“Aviation-grade leather” means leather that has been flame-retardant treated and tested to the FAR 25.853(a) 12-second vertical burn test, and that ships with a material-test record tying those results to the hide you received. It is not an FAA approval category — there is no such thing as FAA-approved leather — it is a description of how the hide was finished and what documentation comes with it.

Three things separate it from ordinary upholstery leather: an FR topcoat or impregnation applied during finishing, burn-test results recorded against a specific production run and dye lot, and paperwork that connects that record to the shipment. Ordinary automotive or furniture leather has none of these, and no amount of quality makes up for the missing record.

What the burn test actually measures

Leather used as a seat covering is evaluated under 14 CFR Part 25 Appendix F Part I, the 12-second vertical Bunsen burner test.

Leather does not melt or drip the way a thermoplastic does — it chars. That is part of why it performs well here. But untreated leather will still carry a flame past the burn length limit, which is why the FR finish matters.

Test evidence and installation approval are different things

This is the distinction that causes the most trouble. A report showing how a leather performed in a particular test is evidence about the material. It does not, by itself, approve the completed seat or interior.

Aircraft category, certification basis, the cushion and fire blocker underneath, adhesives, thread, seam construction, and the alteration method can all affect what the approving authority requires. The material record is one input to that determination. It is not the determination.

What to ask before buying aircraft upholstery leather

  • What was tested? The leather construction and test configuration, not a marketing name.
  • Which test is recorded? Ask for the cited standard and procedure. FAR 25.853(a) 12-second vertical is the one that applies to seat coverings. A protective-clothing or furniture standard is not a substitute.
  • How is the shipment identified? A useful document connects the record to the color and dye lot actually supplied.
  • Who accepts it? Confirm the required evidence with the A&P, IA, repair station, engineer, or other responsible approval authority before cutting.
  • What about everything else? Thread, foam, fire blocker, and adhesive are separate items with separate documentation. The leather record covers the leather.

That wording is deliberate. The record covers the leather material described in the document. It is not FAA approval of the aircraft, the seat, or the finished installation, and we will not describe it that way.

The practical characteristics still matter

Once the approval path is settled, compare the things that determine how the cabin wears: hide size and yield, thickness, finish, how it flexes over compound curves, light exposure and colorfastness, cleaning method, and color consistency across hides.

Because leather is a natural material and we sell it by the full hide, check color and hand before committing — the Slipstream sample deck is the selection tool. And plan quantity properly: the trade conversion is roughly 18 square feet of hide per yard of 54-inch fabric, which already carries a waste factor for hide shape and natural markings.
