What Makes Leather "Aviation-Grade"? A Buyer's Guide to Certified Aircraft Upholstery Leather

Not all leather can go in an aircraft. "Aviation-grade" isn't a marketing phrase — it's a specific flammability standard, a specific weight and finish, and a specific piece of paper that has to travel with the hide. If you're recovering aircraft seats or a cabin interior, here's exactly what separates certified aviation leather from ordinary upholstery leather, and how to buy it without a costly mistake.

The short answer

Aviation-grade leather is upholstery leather that has been pre-treated and independently burn-tested to pass FAR 25.853, the FAA's flammability standard for aircraft cabin materials — and that ships with burn documentation so your interior paperwork is covered. It's also built heavier and finished tougher than decorative furniture leather, because an aircraft seat sees far more wear than a living-room chair.

Standard upholstery leather — even beautiful, expensive furniture leather — is not aviation-grade unless it carries that FAR 25.853 test result. Grain and color can look identical; the difference is in the treatment and the certificate.

The one spec that matters most: FAR 25.853

FAR 25.853 (14 CFR 25.853) is the FAA regulation governing the flammability of materials inside an aircraft cabin. For upholstery, the relevant test is the 12-second vertical burn test: a sample is held to a flame for 12 seconds, and it has to self-extinguish quickly, with limited burn length and no excessive flaming drips.

Leather doesn't pass this on its own. It has to be chemically treated to meet the standard, and then a sample has to be lab-tested to prove it. That test result — the burn certificate — is what an installer, inspector, or IA is going to ask for. No certificate, no legal install in a certified aircraft.

Why weight and finish matter, not just the burn test

Passing the burn test is the gate, but it's not the whole story. Aircraft seats get boarded, buckled, leaned on, and cleaned constantly, so aviation leather is built heavier and more protected than decorative leather:

The paperwork is part of the product

For aviation, the certificate is not an afterthought — it's part of what you're buying. An interior job in a certified aircraft needs documentation showing the upholstery meets FAR 25.853, tied to the actual material installed.
