Marine vinyl UV guide
Yes — marine vinyl is made to resist UV, but "UV resistant" is a marketing phrase rather than a specification, and it is not a pass or fail. What you want is a named lightfastness test with a result: AATCC 16 or an equivalent xenon-arc exposure, reported as a rating or a number of hours. Two vinyls can both say UV resistant and be a decade apart in service life.
Ask for the test. A supplier who has it will send it; a supplier who does not will send adjectives.
What UV actually does to vinyl
Sun damage is not one failure, it is three, and they arrive in order.

By the time a seat is cracking, it has been failing for two or three seasons. Chalking is the stage where covering or shading the boat still changes the outcome.
UV and heat are not the same problem
This gets conflated constantly. UV degrades the polymer chemically. Heat drives plasticiser out physically and makes the seat unpleasant to sit on. Both come from the same sun, and a material can be good at one and ordinary at the other.

Colour is a specification, not just a preference
Dark colours absorb more energy, run hotter, and lose plasticiser faster. Whites and light greys stay cooler and hold up longer under the same exposure, but show soil, mildew and pink staining sooner.
There is no free choice here. What removes most of the penalty is choosing a material engineered for heat, so the dark seat runs closer to what a light one would.
What you control, beyond the material
- Cover the boat. Nothing on a spec sheet outperforms shade. A cover roughly doubles the useful life of a seat.
- Do not cover damp seats. Trapping moisture under a cover trades a UV problem for a mildew and pink-stain problem. Dry first.
- Rinse the salt and residue off. Salt crystals and sunscreen concentrate on the surface and accelerate degradation.
- Watch the horizontal surfaces. They take several times the exposure of vertical ones, which is why seat tops fail while backrests still look new.
What to ask a supplier
- Which UV test, and what result? AATCC 16, xenon arc, hours of exposure — a number, not an adjective.
- Cold crack temperature? Sun is only half the climate cycle. A material that survives August and splits in January has not solved the problem.
- Mildew and anti-pinking results? AATCC 30 and ASTM E1428. Sun-exposed seats are also damp seats.
- Anything for heat specifically? Most vinyls have no answer to this at all.
