If you trim boats, cars, or commercial seating, you have almost certainly specified Olympus. Keyston Bros launched it in 2005, and twenty years later it is one of the default vinyls in marine and automotive shops across the country. It is a good material with a long track record, and we are not here to argue otherwise.
We also sell a house-brand vinyl called Pinnacle that competes with it directly, which means we get asked how the two compare several times a week. So here is the comparison done the only way it is worth doing: both published spec sheets, line by line, every number quoted as the manufacturer publishes it. Where Olympus is ahead, we say so. Where a number looks decisive but is not, we say that too.
The short version
If you read nothing else:
- Structurally the two are near-identical — 54" wide, 30-yard rolls, a PVC face on a polyester backing, with a protective topcoat.
- Olympus is ahead on three published numbers: abrasion, weight, and color count.
- Pinnacle is ahead on cold crack and UV — by margins that are not close — and publishes roughly three times as many test results, including antibacterial, anti-pinking, bleach cleanability and a written warranty.
- The differences that will actually show up in a finished seat are cold crack, UV, and how the material tolerates cleaning chemicals. The double-rub number is the one most people focus on and the one least likely to matter. We explain why below, using the industry's own guidance rather than ours.
Side by side, every published line
Pinnacle figures are from its published specification sheet. Olympus figures are from the Keyston Bros / KB Contract digital specification sheet for Olympus. “Not published” means the manufacturer does not list that property — it does not mean the material fails it.

Where Olympus is ahead
Abrasion. 1,800,000+ double rubs against Pinnacle's 1,500,000. That is a real 20% gap on paper. We address what it means in the next section, but the number is theirs and it is higher.
Weight. 36 oz per linear yard against 33.17. Olympus is a heavier material, and its terry-loop backing is part of that. Heavier vinyl generally feels more substantial in the hand and can be slightly more forgiving over a rough substrate. It is also stiffer to pull into a tight radius, which cuts both ways depending on what you are covering.
Color range. 57 colors against 40. If you are matching into an existing interior, more colors is a genuine advantage and there is no way around it.
Sulfide stain resistance and BIFMA Class A. Olympus publishes both; Pinnacle publishes neither. Sulfide staining is a different failure from the microbial pink staining Pinnacle tests for, and if you are trimming near sulfur-bearing rubber or in an industrial environment, that published line has value.
Twenty years in the field. A spec sheet is a prediction. Two decades of trimmers putting a material on real seats is evidence. Olympus has that and Pinnacle does not yet.
The double-rub number, in context
This is the spec everyone quotes and the one that deserves the most skepticism — and that is not our opinion, it is the position of the Association for Contract Textiles, the body that writes the performance guidelines the industry uses.
ACT's published guideline for high-traffic coated upholstery — the category both of these materials sit in — is 50,000 double rubs. Olympus is 36 times that. Pinnacle is 30 times that. Both are so far past the threshold that the ratio between them stops describing anything you will experience.
ACT requires any manufacturer publishing results above its guidelines to carry this statement:
“Abrasion test results exceeding ACT Performance Guidelines are not an indicator of product lifespan.”
ACT is blunter still in its own guidance: higher abrasion numbers “do not necessarily indicate a significant extension of the fabric's service life,” and field failures come far more often from inappropriate cleaning, poor maintenance, physical abuse, and the wrong material in the wrong application than from surface abrasion.
There is a second problem with comparing the two figures directly: Olympus does not publish which test produced its number. Wyzenbeek and Martindale are different machines with different abradants and they do not convert to one another. Pinnacle's 1,500,000 is stated as Wyzenbeek. Olympus's 1,800,000+ may or may not be. Without that, 1.8 million and 1.5 million are not strictly the same unit.
We will go further, because it costs us the argument and it happens to be true: Pinnacle's own spec sheet prints the same warning. Directly beneath our abrasion figure, in a footnote on our own material, it reads:
“Results above 100,000 double rubs have not been shown to be an indicator of increased lifespan.”
That is our own documentation telling you not to buy Pinnacle on the strength of the number we just published. We left it in because it is true.
None of this is a knock on Olympus. It is a knock on the way the whole industry sells double rubs. If you are choosing between two materials that both clear 1.5 million, abrasion is not your deciding factor. Look at the next two specs instead.
Where Pinnacle is ahead, and why it matters
Cold crack: −55 °C (−67 °F) vs −20°
This is the single largest gap on the sheet, and it is the one that puts boats in the shop.
Cold crack is the temperature at which plasticized vinyl loses flexibility and fractures instead of bending. It does not fail across an open panel — it fails at the fold, the welt, and the staple line, exactly where the material is already under strain. A boat cover in an unheated shed in Michigan, a golf cart left out in a Carolina cold snap, a truck seat in a January parking lot: every one of those is a scenario where a cold seat gets sat on and the seam splits.
Olympus publishes −20° without a unit. Read generously as −20 °F, it is a competent cold-weather number. Read as −20 °C, it is −4 °F. Pinnacle's −55 °C is −67 °F either way — a margin of at least 47 °F over the most favorable reading of the competing number.
If your work stays in a conditioned building, this line is noise. If it goes outdoors north of the Gulf, it is the most important number on the page.
UV: Grade 4 at 1,500 hours vs 650 hours
Olympus publishes 650 hours of UV resistance. Pinnacle publishes AATCC 16.3, Grade 4 at 1,500 hours.
Two things are different here. The obvious one is duration — 1,500 against 650, more than double the exposure. The less obvious one matters as much: Pinnacle publishes the grade it achieved. Grade 4 on the AATCC gray scale means slight but perceptible color change. A number of hours without a grade tells you how long the sample sat in the machine, not how it looked when it came out.
What this predicts in service is fade, chalking, and the surface going hard and dull on the sun-facing side of a seat while the shaded side still looks new. It is the most common complaint on any outdoor seat past year three.
Heat: Staycool
Pinnacle is built with Staycool technology, which keeps the material up to 10% cooler in direct sunlight than conventional PVC — every color, including the dark ones. Olympus publishes no heat specification at all.
Nobody writes this into a spec, and every customer notices it. A black vinyl helm seat in July decides whether the boat gets used. Cooler surface temperature is also easier on the material itself, since heat accelerates plasticizer migration — the same process that eventually leaves vinyl stiff and brittle.
Cleaning chemistry, named
Olympus's sheet gives a good three-method stain chart built around Formula 409, Fantastik, isopropyl alcohol, and diluted acetone, and cautions against vinyl conditioners on PreFixx-finished material. That is genuinely useful, and more than most vinyls publish.
Pinnacle goes further in the direction that matters for commercial work: it publishes bleach cleanability plus ten named hospital-grade disinfectants — Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, Virox 5, Accel Five TB, Accel Concentrate, Oxivir Plus, Oxivir TB Plus, Oasis 146, Optim 33TB, and isopropyl alcohol, with dilution ratios specified and a requirement to wipe down with clean water afterward.
If you are quoting a clinic, a gym, a salon chair, a senior-living dining room, or anything a facilities manager wipes down on a schedule, that list is the difference between winning the job and guessing. It is also the difference between a seat that survives five years of daily disinfecting and one that goes tacky and cracks at the seams.
Antibacterial and anti-pinking, tested and warranted
Pinnacle's protective finish is anti-stain, anti-bacterial, anti-mildew and anti-pinking, and three of those four carry a published test method: AATCC 147-2011 for antibacterial performance, AATCC 30-III and ASTM G21 Class 1 for mildew, and ASTM E1428-15a for pink staining. Olympus publishes mildew resistance as a yes with no method attached, and publishes no antibacterial line at all.
The pinking claim goes past a test result into a warranty: Pinnacle is warranted not to become unserviceable from mildew or pinking. One condition worth knowing before you quote it — the warranty requires that any foam used underneath be certified against mildew and pinking too. Pink staining very often starts in the foam and migrates up through the vinyl, so a certified face over uncertified foam is a claim you will lose. If you are building for a wet environment, spec the foam to match.
The mechanical numbers nobody asks for until something tears
Pinnacle publishes tensile, tear, seam slippage, elongation, crocking, anti-static, and 14-week accelerated ageing, each with the ASTM or ISO method attached. Olympus publishes none of these.
Seam slippage is the one to care about. It is the test that predicts whether a sewn seam pulls apart under load, and on a boat seat — where the seam takes the whole weight of a person landing on it — it is a better predictor of a callback than abrasion will ever be.
Chemistry and warranty on the record
Pinnacle publishes phthalate-free, formaldehyde-free, flame-retardant-additive free, no intentionally added PFAS, PFOA or PFC, heavy-metal free, REACH compliant and Red List Free, manufactured under ISO 14001 with solvent recapture, and carries a 3-year limited warranty against loss of color, loss of strength, abrasion and pilling under normal use. Olympus publishes AB 2998 and Prop 65 compliance, which are real, but no broader chemistry statement and no warranty period we could find.
For most trim work this is paperwork. For institutional, healthcare, education, and government jobs it is a bid requirement, and a missing line is a disqualification.
The two stain tests measure different things
This one is worth separating out because it is easy to get wrong.
Olympus publishes sulfide stain resistance. That is a chemical failure — sulfur compounds from rubber, exhaust, or industrial air reacting with the material and discoloring it.
Pinnacle publishes pink stain resistance to ASTM E1428. That is a biological failure — a Streptomyces organism growing under or in the vinyl and blooming pink or salmon from the inside. It is the thing that ruins white and light-gray boat seats, it appears under covers and in damp bilges, and it cannot be cleaned off because it is not on the surface.
Neither product publishes the other's number. If your work is marine and light-colored, the pink-stain line is the one you want. If it is industrial or near heavy rubber, sulfide is. They are not substitutes for each other.
Which one to buy
Olympus makes sense if you already have a Keyston account and a color that works, you need a color Pinnacle does not offer, your job specifically calls for published sulfide stain resistance or BIFMA Class A, or the material lives indoors in a climate-controlled space where cold crack and UV never come into play.
Pinnacle makes sense if the finished piece goes outside or sits unheated in winter; if it faces direct sun; if it will be cleaned with disinfectants or bleach; if you are bidding institutional work that wants chemistry statements, test methods, and a warranty on the record; or if you do not have a trade account and do not want to file paperwork to buy 6 yards.
Neither one is aviation. Pinnacle is not FAR 25.853 rated and Olympus does not publish an aviation rating either. If you are trimming an aircraft interior, both are off the table — call us and we will point you at material that is.
How you buy each
Olympus is sold through Keyston Bros on a trade account. Pricing is behind a login, and opening an account requires an application plus an uploaded business license and resale certificate, approved in one to two business days. If you run an established shop, that is a formality. If you are one person with a sewing machine and a boat seat, it is a wall.
Pinnacle is $31.50 per yard, published on the page, cut by the yard with no minimum and no account required. Volume pricing drops it to $27.50 on larger quantities, applied per color and pattern. Everyone pays the same price — there is no trade tier, because everyone is already getting trade pricing. A tax ID gets you tax exemption, not a better number.

If you are cross-shopping, order a sample of the Pinnacle color closest to the Olympus you are using now and put them side by side — nobody should switch material on a spec sheet alone, including on ours.
