Product Details

A solid brown natural cowhide rug with warm, even color and genuine hair texture.

You pick your exact hide. Because no two hides are alike, we photograph two or three in your color and send them to you — you choose the one you want, then we ship it. No blind “closest available” substitutions.

Buying more than one? Hides two and three ride in the same box, so we pass the saving on: 5% off two hides, 8% off three or more, applied automatically in the cart. Mix and match any colours or patterns.

  • Large hide: averages 38–45 sq ft — roughly 6 ft × 7 ft
  • Premium South American hide, 3.5–3.75 oz (1.6–1.8 mm), chrome tanned, full grain with the hair on
  • Passes California Bulletin 117-2013 and UFAC/NFPA 260 Class 1
  • Use as a rug, throw, or wall piece — or cut it for pillows, upholstery accents, handbags and accessories

Care: vacuum with a soft brush attachment; spot-clean with a little mild soap in distilled water. Keep away from direct heat.

Ships free, fast, from within the United States. Every hide is one of a kind and reserved just for you once you choose it, so all sales are final — no returns or exchanges. You approve your hide from photos before it ships, so there are no surprises.

A note on natural hides: Cowhide is a natural product — no two hides are alike. Sizes vary (roughly 38–45 sq ft), and colors, patterns, and markings differ from hide to hide. Screen settings can also shift how colors appear. That’s why you choose your exact hide from photos of the actual hides in stock before we ship — what you pick is what you get.

Care & Cleaning
Routine care: shake the hide out or beat it gently outdoors now and then. Vacuum with a soft brush attachment, moving with the direction of the hair, not against it. Spills: blot immediately with a clean dry cloth. Do not rub — rubbing pushes the stain into the hair and can mat it. For anything that remains, spot-clean with a little mild soap in distilled water, blot with a damp cloth, and let it air dry flat. Never: machine wash, soak, wring, tumble dry, steam clean, or use solvents, bleach or harsh detergents. Water sitting in the backing is what ruins a hide. Keep away from direct heat — fireplaces, radiators, floor vents and underfloor heating will dry the backing and make it curl. Prolonged direct sun will fade the color over time; rotate the hide occasionally so it ages evenly. Some loose hair in the first weeks is normal for any hair-on hide and settles with use. On a slick floor, use a rug pad. For storage, roll the hide hair-side out — never fold it, as creases in the backing can set permanently. Professional leather cleaning is the right call for a large or set-in stain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real hide?

Yes. Every one is a genuine South American cowhide — chrome tanned, full grain, with the hair still on. It is a natural single hide, not a pieced or stitched-together panel.

How does picking my own hide work?

You order, and before anything ships we photograph two or three actual hides in your color and send you the pictures. You tell us which one you want and that is the hide that goes in the box. No blind “closest available” substitution, and no surprises when you open it.

How big is it?

These are large hides, averaging 38 to 45 square feet — roughly 6 ft by 7 ft. Substance is 3.5 to 3.75 oz (1.6 to 1.8 mm). Every hide is a natural shape, so the outline is irregular and the exact size varies within that range. If a project needs a minimum dimension, tell us and we will measure before we send photos.

Will mine look exactly like the picture on this page?

No, and that is the point of the selection process. No two hides carry the same markings, and screen settings shift color as well. The photo here shows the character of the type. The hides we photograph for you show what you are actually getting.

Can I return it?

No — natural-hide items are final sale. Once you choose your hide it is reserved and pulled for you, so it cannot go back into stock. That is exactly why you approve yours from photographs first. If something arrives damaged in transit, call us and we will make it right.

Can I cut it up, or is it only a rug?

Cut it. Plenty of ours go into pillows, upholstery accents, chair seats, handbags and wall pieces. It passes California Bulletin 117-2013 and UFAC / NFPA 260 Class 1, so it is usable in upholstered work, not just on the floor.

Does it shed?

A little loose hair in the first few weeks is normal for any hair-on hide and settles down with use. Shake it out and vacuum with a soft brush attachment in the direction of the hair. Heavy ongoing shedding is not normal — call us if you see it.

Can I put it in front of a fireplace or over underfloor heating?

Keep it away from direct heat. Fireplaces, radiators, floor vents and underfloor heating dry out the backing and make the edges curl, and that damage does not reverse. Prolonged direct sun will fade it too, so rotate it now and then.

How does it ship?

Free, and fast, from within the United States. Hides ship rolled. Unroll it and let it relax flat for a day or two — any travel creases settle out on their own.

Do you discount multiple hides?
Yes. Hides two and three ship in the same box, so we pass the saving on: 5% off two hides and 8% off three or more, applied automatically in the cart. Mix any colors or patterns — they all count toward the same break. Shipping stays free either way.
