That changes the layout job. With plain vinyl, a small shift may disappear. With diamonds, hexagons, or a directional flow pattern, the same shift can leave the finished insert visibly off-center. The reliable approach is to build the layout from real pattern pieces, establish a visual centerline, and check the complete arrangement before the shears come out.
1. Start with the finished panel size and your actual pattern pieces
Carolyn Fabrics' standard configured and Quick-Order CNC panels currently finish at approximately 48 × 28 inches after sewing. Lay out against that finished area—not the larger raw blank used before stitching. If the project needs an unlisted size, pattern, material, or a coordinated multi-panel run, use the custom CNC quote form so feasibility can be confirmed before anything is ordered.
Use the same pattern pieces you would use to build the cover. If you are replacing an existing cover, carefully separated original pieces can provide useful shapes and reference marks. If there is no usable cover, pattern each face of the seat or assembly directly. A length-by-width note is not enough for a curved insert, bolster, console, or door section.
Before layout, confirm what each template represents:
- Mark the face, top, and centerline.
- Mark match points, notches, and the seams that meet neighboring pieces.
- Confirm whether the template already includes seam allowance.
- Identify which pieces will use the stitched panel and which will use plain matching material.
2. Treat seam allowance and pattern-positioning room as different things
Seam allowance belongs to the construction pattern. Use the allowance required by your pattern and sewing method; there is no universal number that fits every upholstery job. If the template already includes it, do not add it a second time.
Pattern-positioning room is different. It is the uncut area that lets you slide a template until a diamond column, hex cell, or center stitch lands where you want it. The amount depends on the stitch repeat and the piece being cut. Do not trim the panel to a final rectangle first and hope the pattern lands correctly afterward.
Because the panel arrives already stitched, use its finished face for layout. You do not need to predict the quilting take-up that occurred during production; it is already reflected in the finished panel size.
3. Choose a visual control line before centering anything
On the most visible piece—usually a seat insert, seat back, bench face, or door-panel center—decide what the eye should read as centered. That may be the center of a diamond column, a stitch line, the center of a hexagon, or the axis of a directional pattern. Align the template centerline to that control line and check both edges.
Do not judge the center from only one corner. Step back and look at the whole piece. A mathematically centered template can still look wrong if the stitch pattern enters one side at a strong point and exits the other through an awkward partial repeat. Move the template within the available working area until the result looks balanced.
4. Keep orientation consistent across related pieces
Mark an arrow on every template and keep related pieces facing the same direction on the panel. Rotating one piece 90 degrees may save material, but it can make the stitched geometry—and sometimes the way the face catches light—read differently from the pieces beside it.
When a seat bottom meets a seat back, or several cushions sit in a row, place those templates together during layout. Check whether the stitch rows should continue across the seam, share a common centerline, or deliberately reset on each piece. Make that decision before cutting. Pattern matching is a layout decision; the sewing machine cannot recover a repeat that was cut in the wrong position.
5. Build the full cutting map before cutting the first piece
Arrange every stitched-face template on a paper rectangle or work surface representing the 48 × 28-inch finished panel. Include each piece's seam allowance and the room needed to position the stitch repeat. Label the layout so a later piece does not get turned or mirrored by accident.
Avoid nesting pieces as tightly as you would on solid vinyl. Pattern centering and continuity usually require more space. It is often more efficient to use the stitched panel only for the visible inserts and use matching vinyl by the yard for bolsters, bands, welt, and surrounding sections. 6. Mark, verify, and only then cut
- Place the template on the finished panel and align its centerline.
- Confirm top, face, and direction.
- Check the visible pattern balance at every edge.
- Compare adjoining templates and match points.
- Trace the complete cutting line, including the correct seam allowance.
- Photograph or sketch the approved layout before moving anything.
- Cut one piece, recheck the remaining layout, then continue.
If the layout is crowded, stop there. A different standard pattern, a second panel, or a quoted custom size is cheaper than forcing a visibly crooked insert out of a panel that does not fit the cutting map.
